As a book for younger children to teach them about being good and living a good life this is excellent. As an adult who is not a Buddhist a nice gentle and soothing read. If you are a Buddhist even to a small degree it is a great reminder of all the principles by which we should all live. You are not going to be faced with any deep philosophical arguments here, which can be a relief – there are plenty enough of those books on Buddhist principles already. This is a nice relief and an easy read, recommended to just about everyone to read at least once in their lives.

I bought two copies of this book, one for myself and one for a friend who I think may like and understand its purpose, even though I am a practitioner of Buddhism and he isn’t. Most practitioners and students of Buddhism will already recognise this style of story-telling. As fables or parables, they have simple themes and are intended to make you think about the specifics of Buddhist practice and its eightfold noble path, particularly in Zen Buddhism. But the glorious thing is that they can make everyone stop to think, in just the same way that, say, Aesop’s fables had a similar purpose. The book is a simple read and suitable for anyone from childhood through to old age, to help learn some of the truths of living and often a gentler and more peaceful way to look at life.

Got this as a bedtime book for my boy (and for me). The Stories are a couple of pages each with a drawing and another page of explanation. My sons 4/5 year old mind is still has the plasticity to take the abstract stories as they are read, I was worried that they were a bit complicated but with a word change here and there they work perfectly.I really like oriental wisdom and contemplation so found this book to be a pleasure and a great 5 minute distraction when needed in this busy world.

it takes no time to read a story and it stays with you. I found it best to savour one story at a time, think about it and move on to the next
