Mrs Elaine Coombes –
Brilliant book giving understandable background to the different empires, timelines and even the myths of these wonderful empires. The best interpretation of the epic of Gilgamesh I have read to date. My initial interest was in Assyria but then I wanted to learn the lead up to the Assyrian empire to fully understand how they came into being. This gives you a very good understanding of how these empires came to be leading you to research deeper into each of these and others empires in the surrounding areas of Mesopotamia. Highly recommend.

I thought I’d give this ‘captivating history’ set a go as, at the price, it would be no great loss if it turned out to be inferior. But as another reviewer says they don’t really amount to history. The historical components are presented as a great wedge of facts, names, dates, places, with only approximate organisation, but then no treatment at all as to the how and why underlying those facts. Why did civilisation begin at Sumer? Because the Mesopotamian alluvial plain provided a basis for agriculture productive enough to produce a food surplus, etc. These kind of process aspects are entirely missing. The mythological aspects are interesting but presented rather haphazardly as though the author has just dumped the content of his memory ontpo paper and not taken to time to make it coherent. The books might be useful as reference works for things like King lists and dynasties, but only if you had grounded your understanding in more serious and systematic history texts. As i half suspected from the price the idea of ‘captivating history’ books is just too good to be true.

Disappointingly simplistic book and very poorly presented in terms of the images and maps which are faint freestyle and much too small. Images are credited as having been lifted from wikipedia, not their original source. I agree the text is superficial. Cant recomend it at all.

Mesopotamia: A Captivating Guide to Ancient Mesopotamian History and Civilizations…
Beaucoup d’information. Illustrations are all in black & white and not of very good quality.
